Memorial Day
Each Memorial Day the mood in Depoe Bay is a little different. There is a somber note that can be heard on the wind. If one were to walk or drive through the town and cross the bridge, they would look down and see the fishing vessels and Coast Guard boats adorned with wreaths of flowers. They would also notice the parking lot full of people, not cars.
This passerby would be witnessing the annual Fleet of Flowers ceremony. This moving ceremony has been taking place since 1945. The citizens of Depoe Bay, Coast Guard personnel, their families, and tourists from near and far gather together on a national day of remembrance to honor all those who have been lost at sea, as well as the men and women who have served and are serving in the armed forces.
Fleet of Flowers begins at 11 am with music by local men and women, speeches from the mayor and other prominent people in Depoe Bay. It also includes a 21 gun salute by some of the members of Coast Guard Station Depoe Bay. After the ceremonial wreaths are presented to the fishing captains, the local fire department presents the Coast Guard with their wreath.
When taps have been played and the colors retired the fishing vessels, lead by the Coast Guard, pull out of the harbor. They circle around the buoy and lay their wreaths in the water in remembrance of those lost. The ceremony is somber, moving and always memorable. It is must see for all who are in the area on Memorial Day.

After the Holidays: R, R & R
After the Holidays: Rest, Relax & Restore
The holidays are over, the new year has begun, time to have a little rest and relaxation. The soothing sounds of the surf across the spit, all the little birds sharing their summer plans, and the quiet of winter on the bay will help you restore your balance and get you ready for all the challenges to come.
The Whales will soon be back.
The Gray Whale migration will begin again in March and continue through June. About 18,000 whales will pass by the Oregon coast during this migration. "Whale Watch Spoken Here" volunteers will be at several nearby locations durin the week of March 19-26 to help you in spotting the whales and offer many tidbits of information about the whales traveling through. Visit http://www.whalespoken.org/ for more information.
